Amelie Review:
Few movies create their own universe; notable examples are: “The Wizard of Oz”, “American Beauty” and “Vertigo.” Each of these films created its own space within our universe that cannot be touched. You could add “le Fabuleux destin d’Amelie Poulain” to this list; here we see something so original yet heartwarming (not in an overly commercialized sense!) yet funny that creates its own place within it all – creating its own sense of unspoken belonging in which laughter becomes vitality!
Filmtells the tale of Amelie (Audrey Tautou). She finds her life lacking something meaningful until hearing of Princess Diana’s passing brings a swift sense of regret and she drops a bottle cap onto the floor which rolls forward dislodging a tile from her bathroom wall – symbolising something missing in life. Amelie discovers something under that tile which leads her to decide she wants to do everything possible to bring joy and happiness to those around her. And she succeeds greatly at doing just this! Amelie stands out in particular, helping a blind man across a street and rapidly providing him with details about their surroundings that allow him to form an image of what it looks like for himself – just one example of her many selfless acts to bring happiness.
Amelie becomes increasingly conscious that by helping anonymously she risks living her own life alone and without the happiness that brings others. Amelie’s inner struggle provides much-needed drama without ever becoming heavy – a brilliantly funny script brought to visual splendor by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (“Alien: Resurrection”, among many other films). Audrey Tatou delivers one of this year’s warmest, sincerest, and most enjoyable performances as the lead.
