Marvel Studios’ Eternals (2021) – Storyline/Plot:
Following the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), an unexpected tragedy forces the Eternals, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years, out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s most ancient enemy, the Deviants.
Review of Marvel Studios’ Eternals (2021 Film):
The concept for this story is quite imaginative – some 7,000 years ago, immortals from different races arrived on Earth to protect their population against an evil race called Deviants that aim to devour us all. Their “Primary Directive”, so to speak, is that they do not intervene in human disputes; once the beasties have been exterminated they disband and return to living individual lives. “Sersi” (Gemma Chan), her friend “Sprite” (Lia McHugh), and Dane (Kit Harrington) find themselves under attack by an unfamiliar creature in London only to be saved by “Ikaris” (Richard Madden), forcing the group to come together again. Once back together they discover Ajak (Selma Hayek), who now must unite forces against this ever-strengthening adversary while understanding why he or she has returned.
Unfortunately, what follows next is an impressive-looking yet ultimately pretty dull series of set-piece scenarios that combine mythology, melodrama, romance, and action in a rather awkward fashion. Madden makes for great camera fodder but as an actor (even dressed up in blue leather!) he remains little more than an attractive face in front of it all. Kumail Nanjiani (“KIngo”) shows signs of charisma; unfortunately, the rest of the cast, including Angelina Jolie (“Thena”) and Harish Patel (“Karun”) who insist on videoing everything at considerable personal risk to himself, really provide little by way of characterization or attempts at humor that mostly fail miserably. The story has some impressive effects, yet that should come as no surprise as this is what viewers nowadays can expect even from subpar productions. What was necessary here were significantly fewer actors and an engaging plot – something the production probably could have achieved with much fewer resources (real or otherwise). Instead, an extra half hour may have been saved from justifying such an extravagant budget in multiple settings (real and otherwise). There’s also an unnerving scene midway through the credits which doesn’t bode well for its sequel either, leaving me rather disappointed by this film and making me forgettable overall experience on the big screen. Regardless, its colorful, action-packed adventure was surely enjoyable but otherwise completely forgettable for me as an audience member.
