Review of Marvel Studios’ Eternals (2021 Film):

7,000 years ago, an interstellar race of immortals arrived on Earth to protect us all against an evil race known as Deviants who wish nothing other than our destruction. According to their “Prime Directive”, or mandate, they do not interfere in human disputes; once they have cleared away all beasties they disband and live separate lives. Once “Sersi” (Gemma Chan), her friend “Sprite” (Lia McHugh), and Dane (Kit Harrington) are attacked in London by an increasingly powerful creature but saved by Richard Madden-played “Ikaris”, their reunion is forced. Soon enough they discover Ajak (Selma Hayek), but now must band together against this new adversary who seems determined on becoming ever stronger while uncovering why she reemerges.

Unfortunately, what follows next is an eye-catching but ultimately lackluster series of set-piece scenarios that clumsily combine mythology with melodrama, romance, and action. Madden shines before the camera but as an actor (even wearing blue leather!) he fails to stand out beyond being simply attractive. Kumail Nanjiani as “King”) exhibits some charm; unfortunately the rest of his cast (Angelina Jolie as Thena and Harish Patel as Karun who is insistent upon filming everything to record against himself), fails to provide much by way of character development and fails to deliver laughs most times. The story has some wonderful effects, yet that is all we expect of even the lowest-grade productions nowadays. What was needed here were far fewer actors and an engaging narrative – even if that meant losing half an hour spent justifying an enormous budget in various locations (real and fictional). There’s also an unnerving scene halfway through the credits which does not bode well for its successor either. Personally, this movie left me somewhat bored; while certainly an action-packed big-screen experience, I found this film completely forgettable to watch.
