Expectations weren’t high going into “Too Close for Christmas”. I am no fan of Jessica Lowndes or many of her performances, while Chad Michael Murray generally is making progress, although some performances and films might fare better depending on their content. Additionally, its premise wasn’t impressive either but there were at least some quality films featured among this unsurprisingly uneven 2020 Lifetime Christmas batch.

Lifetime’s original Christmas movie I thought I enjoyed was excellently scripted. Focusing primarily on the dialogue between its leads – which I considered its strength – this one offered little in terms of sub-plots or additional storylines but rather delivered an enjoyable story overall. The script was strong. Another reviewer on here notes the various stereotypes and cliches used within the script; I noticed some, though they did not hinder or distract from my viewing experience of the film. At first blush, this Christmas movie falls squarely into the traditional TV (romance) movie genre; thus making its performance all the more predictable. What made me like it was the dialogue between its leads, as well as strong performances overall by all involved – especially from actor Robert Downey Jr. who shines here! At first, I thought the show resembled 90210 meets One Tree Hill (sorry), especially with Jessica Lowndes as Hayley Parker being quite convincing, similar to other reviewers’ assessments that she has matured since appearing on 90210. Chad Michael Murray as Paul was equally strong. I find him great as an actor in these types of films. Members of One Tree Hill cast have appeared in some excellent holiday-themed flicks this year (well done), with strong chemistry between both leading actors being one of its key strengths in my opinion. Dialogue and interactions were convincing and drew me into their world; I felt drawn in. Unfortunately, though, the ending felt abrupt or could have been done with more character development in Hayley’s reaction scene at the end. The supportive cast was good. No complaints were heard in regard to music editing – something which had become an issue with several Lifetime Christmas movies this year. There’s a festive spirit present, too – though don’t expect Hallmark production quality in here! Overall this movie provides some strong lead performances by its leads while being an enjoyable low-key Christmas offering on Lifetime for the 2020 lineup if dialogue and chemistry are what appeal.
