Not many know it, but Terence Stamp first played Alfie on stage over thirty years ago and then turned down film roles after initially turning them down. Terence’s flatmate (an up-and-coming actor himself) tried convincing Terence otherwise, but Terence wouldn’t budge from his position. Michael Caine took on the role of Alfie for this movie and has become perhaps one of the world’s best-known cockney actors ever since then. Many consider Get Carter and The Italian Job Caine’s masterpieces so why remake Alfie now?! Hollywood made attempts at recreating The Italian Job and Get Carter but only produced massive turkeys you couldn’t fit in your oven. Yet instead of making another film featuring Michael Caine that wasn’t any good (THE SWARM: BLAME IT ON RIO!) Hollywood decided instead to remake The Italian Job and Get Carter successfully instead of remaking them badly with turkey-sized results. Caine’s timeless classic Alfie has undergone an update, with pretty boy Jude Law brought in to ask what it’s all about. For those unfamiliar with it all, Alfie lives his life chasing women before either keeping or discarding them. Alfie, an accomplished bird puller who lives for his conquests but soon tires of them when commitment arises, might seem rather cold at first blush; yet such is his nature. Alfie must be brought down a peg or two; this usually results from another conquest with far-reaching implications that he cannot anticipate. Should Alfie have been dusted off for his 2004 audience?
