Ghost Ship has left me extremely impressed since my expectations of it were much different from its actual performance. Although not yet an outstanding horror film, Ghost Ship’s performance represents progress towards being one of them – something worth being thankful for indeed! The cast and crew paid careful attention to creating an unsettling environment rather than assaulting audiences with lame, violent killing scenes; I applaud that effort! The opening scene is professional horror that grasps your attention with every drop, captivating and holding on until the second half when its grip diminishes significantly. As long as the mysterious ship remains an utter riddle, this film remains intriguing, captivating, and artistically shot. Soon after Ghost Ship reveals its plot points, however, the film becomes predictable and dull. Had its script been more imaginatively constructed, however, I believe this film could have become one of the better horror thrillers since 2000. At present, it can only be described as an average effort that lacks talent, yet still manages to impress with its settings and decors. Plus, graphic decorations don’t overwhelm it, giving audiences something incredible to experience at least once! Gabriel Byrne manages to deliver great performances far below his normal standards while the other cast members seem uninspired and forgettable, leaving Ghost Ship as an enjoyable waste of time.
