Putahe 2022 Film Review:

Putahe is a Filipino drama film directed by Roman Perez Jr. Starring Ayanna Misola, Mon Confiado, Janelle Tee, Hershie De Leon, and Ronnie Lazaro in the leading role. 

“Putahe” takes place in Isla Puerta on an isolated tropical island and follows Jenny (Ayanna Misola). She recounts the story from her perspective as a 16-year-old female protagonist.

Jenny, in search of her sexuality, begins the film as the pre-title credits show us. Pleasuring herself using live fish between her thighs to satisfy herself is how we first meet Jenny; although she has an admirer (Massimo Schofield) on board who wants her virginity they remain independent and refuse.

Euka (Janelle Tee), from the city, arrives on their island and quickly opens a carinderia where men flock in exchange for sexual encounters at no cost to her. Jenny hopes to break into culinary arts someday and forms close ties with Euka so they both teach each other to prepare her delectable dishes offered to men from their island who adore it all the more!

Euka is an enthusiastic instructor. She guides Jenny not only in cooking skills but also in sexual relationships between women. Jenny finds this experience to be both educational and sensually fulfilling; this opens her sensuality even further, prompting her to agree to have sexual encounters with her boyfriend as soon as they appear again in his life.

Women on the island instinctively dislike Euka for seducing their men, yet she opens up to Jenny about how she used to live there as Eunice at 16. When Ronnie Lazaro decided instead to marry Jenny’s mother instead, Eunice left heartbroken despite discovering she was already pregnant with Ronnie’s child; vowing revenge upon those who shunned and oppressed her back then, Euka hopes one day to return and exact revenge for its inhabitants who previously treated her so unfairly.

The film’s fast pacing keeps audiences entertained as all sorts of sex scenes — both heterosexual and sapphic — play out on-screen. Janelle Tee is especially notable as she manages to sleep with not only Ayanna Misola but all men in the village even those they find revolting looking.

Janelle can truly act, as evidenced in that scene where she recounts her past to Ayanna; tears easily welling up in her eyes during this scene of telling. Meanwhile, Ayanna delivers such raw performances.

Her lines may lack conviction and her eyes don’t respond appropriately when conveying emotion through dialogue, but male viewers won’t be disappointed by how disrobing scenes go down; she shows no hesitation when engaging in lesbian love scenes with Janelle!

Massimo also performs admirably but we wish he’d stop making faces while speaking his lines on camera; all those expressions can become distracting to viewers; Perez should have kept her composure. Technical credits were excellent though – particularly the cinematography which perfectly captured the idyllic beauty of her island setting.
