Suzume 2023 Movie – Storyline :

Modern action-adventure road story is about Suzume, a 17-year-old girl helping an unknown young man close doors that may cause disaster in Japan.

Suzume, a 17-year-old girl living in Kyushu’s rural towns, meets an energetic young man on an expedition “searching for doors”. After following him to an abandoned building and an undisturbed door that seems immune from destruction in the mountains, Suzume finds herself drawn by an invisible force toward this door – soon doors all across Japan begin opening uninvited; soon thereafter Suzume discovers many others must also close quickly in order to prevent disaster from occurring on its other side; starry skies colliding with dawn or sunset skies come together at these sites; after this encountering mysterious doors that summon her on this voyage of door closing begins her “journey of closing doors”.

Shinkai’s miserable sentimentality had become tiresomely familiar to me in previous works and this film reminded me a great deal of Weathering with You (2019, Shinkai film), featuring plot points that seemed similar to my experience. While still enjoyable, I would like to see him venture outside his comfort zone more frequently in future works.

As always, Shinkai’s animation is absolutely spectacular and amazing. His eye for details in small, mundane places captivates, while idyllic frames filled with exquisite details add even more marvels of detail to each frame. Additionally, I think Shinkai may now favor 3D over 2D; although some frames still look stunning when using both methods simultaneously. However, while 3D looks amazing (see some frames above for proof!), its charm remains somewhat under the radar behind the scenes compared to its 2D equivalent – good and bad all at the same time compared to what used to exist before!).

Although not as memorable, this movie’s score and music still work quite nicely for it and are quite endearing.

The voice acting was generally good. Hanoka Hara is my personal favorite when it comes to Suzume’s voice-acting; her natural tone perfectly portrays Suzume. Unfortunately, Souta sounded unnatural due to having recorded audio playing back; you could clearly tell this was recorded and gave his character an unnatural-sounding quality that came across as cheap.

Suzume is an enjoyable film and I find myself wanting to revisit it quickly; however, unlike Shinkais other works it took longer for me to warm back up to it as much. While still enjoyable, this particular work lacked its usual magic; instead lagging behind slightly everywhere it went.
