The Blue Room 2014 Film Review:

The Blue Room, directed by Mathieu Amalric and adapted from Georges Simenon’s novel of the same name, opens as what soon turns out to be an unusual flashback scene where Julien (Amalric), an otherwise happily married man recalling an intimate encounter he had in a hotel room with Stephanie Cleau’s Stephanie before recalling what actually took place – leading Julien into criminal accusations which are completely unfamiliar to him and leading directly into court case action against his spouse, leading up to all this unfolding tale unfolding! As the story develops so do our understandings as to who may be accused and accused.

The movie’s most captivating elements include its flashback storytelling structure and use of music score. I found one scene particularly fascinating where Julien attempts to burn some papers which slowly vanish into darkness of ocean waters – it was shot and edited intentionally slowly which gave this scene more dimension as an artistic endeavor.

Musical scores tend to be bombastic in these movies; even scenes not intended for drama were often given an exaggerated melodramatic feel by their music score. It has various phases ranging from extremely dramatic, mysterious, frightening or intimidating; its best use comes in court scenes where we see multiple people performing multiple tasks at the same time – the background piano music perfectly complimenting this scene in particular.

This film boasts excellent performances from its lead actors, along with stunning cinematography. If you enjoy stories about adultery and crime, this one won’t disappoint; however, I found that overall this was neither particularly noteworthy or memorable.

At least the man seemed to believe they were nothing. Now under investigation by the police and the courts, what is he accused of?
