Last night my wife and I saw The Woman King (2022). The story follows an African kingdom with a relatively recent (since 1823) ruler that features Africa’s sole female army led by their leader who harbors haunting past memories but enjoys enough trust from her king to serve on his council as she campaigns against slavery through alternative means to riches while those who support slave trading seek to dismember and overthrow it; while those that do support slave trading march against it in attempt to bring down this kingdom. A new recruitment class brings bold ideas as well as memories from its leader…

Gina Prince-Bythewood directed the Love & Basketball movie which stars Viola Davis (The Help), Thuso Mbedu (The Underground Railroad), Lashana Lynch (No Time to Die), Sheila Atim (Doctor Strange: In the Mouth of Madness), John Boyega (Star Wars Episode VII-IV) and Jimmy Odukoya (Mamba’s Diamond).

This movie has so much depth. From its main plot and subplots to incredible writing, brilliant acting performances by all involved, and excellent character portrayals, this movie truly delivers. The character’s inner demons and struggles are vividly brought out throughout their struggles while writing is truly exceptional as is acting. This masterpiece won a number of Oscars this year alone! As the film unfolds, your emotions for every character deepen as they interact and experience hardship or change in life. Even the villains were well done as was their impact in each scene and scene portrayed. Cinematography and lighting use was superb with action scenes being exceptional and fight choreography award-worthy. My only gripe would be an awkward love story that may serve to demonstrate maturity or self-discovery but could have been done without.

Overall, this movie provides everything imaginable – phenomenal action sequences, memorable villains, and character triumphs. I would strongly advise seeing this flick and give it my highest rating; we certainly did! We loved it.
