Awakenings 1990 Movie – Storyline :

Dr. Malcolm Sayer finds work at a hospital in Bronx despite only possessing research experience, becoming its clinical physician. Job is less-than-ideal for him due to social anxiety issues; thus he focuses his research projects on subjects other than humans; while the hospital hires him out of desperation as they cannot find anyone with his qualifications who would accept their offer of employment. Most of his patients are in an altered mental state and housed in what some orderlies refer to as the “garden ward,” where all that can be done to assist is watering and feeding them. He notices that some patients respond in unexpected ways to certain stimuli despite appearing unresponsive at first glance. He discovered through research that these patients all share some similarities, including suffering encephalitis sometime between 1920 and 1930 and their physical states resembling Parkinson’s disease frozen in time. Thus enabling him to persuade even Dr. Kaufman’s disapproving nature that an expensive experimental drug therapy must only be administered on one patient who provides family consent. Leonard Lowe is 41 years old, living with autism since age eleven. Leonard’s loving mother has always provided assistance during this challenging journey and now drug therapy may bring awakening; yet as its effects surface, further complications come into play. Malcolm must persuade Kaufman and the hospital administration to extend therapy treatment to additional patients. Leonard, aware of his surroundings through a catatonic state, may experience mixed feelings about what’s going on; wanting both humane treatment as well as scientific experimentation for maximum long-term benefit of both himself and others involved in his plight. Mrs. Lowe may find herself unprepared to deal with Leonard, as she recalls him fondly as an eleven-year-old boy. Malcolm may find his greatest challenge is stimulating human spirit – both his own as well as that of those around him.::Huggo

Awakenings is the most emotionally moving film I have ever seen. It delves deeply into one of the worst human fears, losing the ability to move and function, but it’s never forced or manipulative, and there’s no heavy-handed message or moral. It’s just a fascinating story that’s beautifully told.
